In the forest the elder prince had to live in the hut of the mendicant. The hut was thatched with leaves. His chief work there was to collect flowers from the forest for the mendicant’s devo- tions. He had sacrificed six men already to Goddess kali whose skulls were kept in the niches of the temple. He needed to sacrifice seven men to receive perfection from Goddess kali. So he made a plan and brought the elder prince from the king to sacrifice him at the altar of kali. The skulls in the temple told the prince a possible way to save himself and for their release too
4. How did the elder prince fall in trouble?
Ans. The mendicant forbade the elder prince to go to the north of the forest as there was danger for him. But one day he pierced a stag with an arrow and the wounded stag ran towards the north. The prince followed it and entered into a house. But he did not find the stag. He found a beautiful young woman sitting near the door with a dice table. The lady asked him for a game of dice and the prince readily agreed. The woman gave him some conditions. The prince lost games three times one by one and according to the woman’s conditions lost his puppy and the hawk including himself to her. The woman put them separately in holes and covered the holes with planks. The woman was actually a ‘Rakshasi’. She kept the prince as the meal for the following day.
5. How did the prince get relieved from the evil plan of the mendicant?
Ans. The younger prince got to realize about the danger of his brother by noticing the tree in their courtyard. He did not wait for a moment and went to the forest taking another puppy and hawk as his companion. When he reached the hut of the mendicant there was noboy in the hut. The mendicant returned after sunset and told the younger prince that his elder brother had fallen into the toils of a Rakshasi who lived in the north. In the same way the younger prince pierced a stag with an arrow and followed the wounded stag. He saw the Rakshasi in the guise of a beautiful woman sitting at the door with a dice table. He played three games and won the game three times. He got back his brother and his two companions. The Rakshasi told them that the mendicant brought the elder prince to kill him before the Goddess kali in his temple. Going to the temple they learnt from the skulls how to save the elder prince from the mendicant’s plan. Following their instruction the elder prince killed the mendicant and got relieved from his evil plan.
6. How did the mendicant make plan with the king?
Ans. The religious mendicant once came to the king. He knew that the king had no issue. The king was anxious about it. The mendicant took the chance. He made a wicked plan. He told the king that he would give a drug to the queen to give birth to twin sons. He gave the drug with a condition that he would take one son with him. Though the condition was very hard, the king agreed. The queen swallowed the medicine and gave birth to two sons. Years passed but the mendicant did not come. They thought he was dead. But when the princess became sixteen years old he came and demanded one prince. After long mourning and lamentation the elder prince was given to the mendicant
7. What did the king and the queen think as the mendicant did not come to claim his share? How were the princes growing up?
Ans. Swallowing the medicine given by the mendicant the queen gave birth to twin princes. They were growing in the king’s house. Years passed but the mendicant did not come to claim his share. Therefore the king and the queen thought that the mendicant was old and he had died. They dismissed all fears from their mind.
The young princes were put under tutors. They were progressing rapidly in their learning. They were also learning the art of horse-riding and shooting with bow. People of that country admired the twin princes because they were uncommonly handsome.
8. What incidents took place when the mendicant and the elder prince were going on their way? What did the prince see when he entered into the depth of the forest?
Ans. When the mendicant and the elder prince were travelling on their way towards the forest they saw some puppy on the roadside. One of the puppies told its mother that it wished to go with the handsome prince. The mother gave it permission to go and the prince took it as his companion. Little further they saw a hawk with its young one sitting on a tree. One of the young hawks wanted to be a companion of the handsome prince. Mother hawk agreed and the prince took it as his companion.
When the prince entered into the deep of the forest he saw a hut thatched with leaves. That was the mendicant’s cell.
9. Who realized that the elder prince was in danger and how? What did he do then?
Ans. The younger prince realized that his brother was in danger. He used every day to look at the tree planted by his elder brother. He hitherto found the leaves of the tree as living green. But he suddenly found some leaves were fading. So he realized that his elder brother was in danger.
The younger brother gave the alarm to the king and the queen. He resolved to go to help his brother. But before going he also planted a tree in the courtyard of the palace. The tree would be the index of the manner of his life. He chose the swiftest horse from the king’s stable and started his journey towards the forest.
10. “Don’t kill me, and I will tell you the secret which will save the life of the elder prince.” -Who said this? What secret did the speaker tell?
Ans. The Rakshasi, who was disguised as a beautiful woman said this.
The Rakshasi told the princes that the mendicant was a worshipper of the Goddess Kali. The man was in search of perfection by using the spirits of departed souls. She said that the man had already sacrificed six men in the altar of Kali. He was looking for his seventh victim. So he had brought the elder prince to sacrifice him to the Goddess. The Rakshasi then told them to go to the temple and find out the truth of what she said.
11. “How did the elder prince kill the mendicant and receive the virtue of perfection from the Goddess?
Ans. The two princes went to the temple of Kall to find out the truth of what the Rakshasi told them. The elder prince entered inside the temple and leamt from the skulls of six men that he would be brought in to this temple by the mendicant as his seventh sacrifice to Goddess Kali. They taught the prince how he could escape his own fate and also do them good. Few day after the mendicant brought the elder prince to the temple to offer him to the Goddess. He told the prince to bow down to the Goddess. The prince told him that as a prince he had never bowed to any one and asked him to show how to do this. The mendicant then prostrated himself before the Goddess. At once the prince separated his head from his body with one slap of his sword. The Goddess became propitious to the prince and gave him the virtue of perfection.
12. “What was the reaction of the king and the queen when the mendicant returned one day to claim his share?
Ans. When the princes were sixteen years old, the mendicant made his appearance at the palace gate and demanded one prince as the king promised. The hearts of the king and the queen dried up within them. They could not expect that the mendicant would come to claim one of the princes. The king and the queen were plunged into a sea of grief. There was nothing for it, however, but to part with one of the princes. They feared that the mendicant might by his curse turn into ashes not only both the princes, but also the king, queen and the palace. So at last they agreed to let the elder prince go with the mendicant.

Ans. The beautiful lady sitting near the door of the fine looking house was actually a ‘Rakshasi.
The Rakshasi in the guise of a beautiful lady was sitting with a dice-table.
The lady told the elder prince that chance had brought him there and she asked the prince to have a game a dice with her.
The elder prince agreed readily. He played the game three times. But he lost all the three games and as the conditions of the game he lost his two companions, the puppy and the young hawk and also gave himself up to the lady to be done to by her anything she pleased.

Ans. The king and the queen were very anxious because they had no sons.
A religious mendicant came to the king to help him in this problem.
